My Dad was in the Army Air Force stationed on Harmon Field on Guam. Initially he trained in San Antonio in the Signal Corps in communications and radar. Once on Guam, he was responsible for keeping the communication equipment at the airfield and on the bombers and later the fighters going by whatever means possible. He told me that because the Japanese were sinking all the supply ships with parts and food when he first got there. Watching these videos, I always wonder if my Dad ever crossed paths with these hero’s. He was discharged honorable after the war as a Tech Sarg. Spent 36 years with Southwestern Bell before retiring in Little Rock. Love you Dad. RIP.

My Uncle flew P-38 Lightenings in the Battle of the Aleutians. One of the proudest days of his life when he could take the wire out of his cap! He lived to a ripe old age and flew all but a few years in extreme age. We don’t make them like him anymore!

My dad was with the First Marine Division in Korea from 1952 to 1953. When he came home he went to East Tennessee State College which became a university located in East Tennessee. That's where he met my mother. That's where I was born and the family adventure began. He went back on active duty and ended going to Okinawa before he retired in 1971. It was an adventure and he retired as a Master Sargent! Semper Fi!

The highly complex P-38 airframe was unique. It required much more maintenance than other airframes. It had the unfortunate tag of a "hanger queen." This was merely a fact to keep the airframes operational. No denigration of its capability. My jet engine instructor had been a P-38 mechanic in the Pacific. The airframe was used successfully in the PTO and severely missed in the ETO. Charles Lindberg instructed P-38 pilots how to change their engine settings in flight to maximize their range on PTO missions with the same technique he had developed flying across the Atlantic years before. The P-38 was a specialized airframe suited well to the PTO. Not a "dogfight" airframe, but a Zoom and Boom airframe typified by Richard Bong. In the ETO they were forced to fly bomber escort duty and were easily shot down by German fighters. Interestingly this is the first memoir I have read or heard that described severe issues flying the P-39. Others have praised it.

What a great episode! How valuable to have that in-depth interview. The P-38 was in it’s best element in the Pacific. There was no need for a heater in the cockpit. In Europe, pilots complained about being cold because there was no effective way to get the heat from the engines to the cockpit because of the twin boom configuration of the P-38. The range of the P-38 was problematic when the US first entered WWII. It took a civilian to teach the Army pilots how to get the most range out of the P-38. This civilian told the pilots and ground personnel that they need to run the engines on the P-38 as lean as possible. His recommendations were much leaner than the Army or Lockheed had ever tried. Many crew chiefs in the Pacific were sure that the civilian’s recommendations would burn up the engines on missions. However, the civilian had a lot of experience in long distance flight. His engine procedures became gospel. After several P-38s returned to base with half full gas tanks, the military soon realized that the civilian knew what he was talking about. The civilian flew 50 missions in the P-38 and was credited with one “kill” of a Japanese plane. When the story of this civilian made the news, General Douglas MacArthur ordered the the civilian, Charles Lindbergh be flown to Australia as quickly as possible.

A great and historical reminince from a Pacific War fighter pilot. What astounds me is these guys flew with no GPS and no radar (why ITC thunderstorms were such a hazard) They had to navigate or rely on a squadron navigation leader, which was highly risky in getting lost in the huge Pacific (unlike in Europe, no rail lines and towns to follow). There were radio beams i suppose, but deploying these, unlike in peace time, was giving away your airfield position to the enemy. Hence, just flying to and from the target was a daunting task. Hats off to those guys and what they did.

I’m not gonna lie this looks like a great government job if you have no motivation. I like it, if cost of living wasn’t so high maybe I’d have more motivation and when I say maybe I mean I would. Bought a house in December 2019. Sold it a year later for a modest gain. Now….i couldn’t afford to buy that house back.

Terrific memory and wonderful story teller. I had to cringe when he mentioned the Congressional Medal of Honor since there is no such medal. I hear military people and politicians today using this term. There is a Medal of Honor but it is not the Congressional Medal of Honor. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is bogus, no such medal.
